Return To Dental Topics> Some snorers have a potentially life-threatening disorder known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The danger that OSA poses is that of blocking the airway as the tongue is sucked against the back of the throat while one is sleeping. This can cause the snorer to stop breathing for as long as a full minute or so. These episodes can occur often, sometimes a few hundred times in one night. As you can imagine, OSA can undermine a good night's sleep and leave you tired all the time, even if you're not the one who snores. For some who snore and/or have mild to moderate OSA, a custom-designed dental device may prove helpful. If you have a snoring problem, check with us for recommendations. You can also receive information by writing to Sleep Disorders Dental Society, 11676 Perry Highway, Bldg. 1, Wexford, PA 15090. Be sure to include a self-addressed, stamped business-size envelope. |
